Google's Project Glass Has A Big Competitor

Bangalore: Finally, here is a competitor to probably one of the most hi-fi gadgets of this year, the Google Glass, an eyeglass frame which does everything from displaying your emails to taking pictures in your field of vision. The new wearable display competitor to Google is a company named Vuzix, with its Vuzix Smart Glasses M100.

The Vuzix Smart Glasses runs on Android operating system and has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities, which allows the connection to a Smartphone easy with an app. The display, which is placed near the viewer’s vision, provides the information equivalent to a four inch Smartphone placed a foot away.

Vuzix, which already sells wearable display systems like augmented reality glasses, plans to launch its Google Glass competitor by next year for under $500. Google glasses, whose commercial release was expected early next year, had been postponed to 2014, according to a report from Time.

According to Paul Travers, the CEO of company who spoke to Mashable, “the device will start out with relatively few features but will become more impressive as app developers write software for it. It starts as a phone accessory, like a hands-free headset. If your phone rings, it will tell you that your friend Samantha is calling by showing her name and photo. The glasses will get their data from an app installed on a user’s Smartphone.”

According to Mashable, Vuzix, which has about 60 patents will not face any problem in developing these gadgets, but will face challenges in convincing people to wear it.
